an account

The AMCI acquaintance party turned out ok.Not as many people perhaps as in the past years, but I chalk this up to the party venue being in a park in Deep Pasig. No beer bongs, nor beer for that matter for me. I got my buzz in a much much classier way: shots of Fundador, Gilbey's Gin and GSM Blue. On occasion I even had a can of Coke to chase it down.

The trainees seem like a swell bunch. And naturally they've all been climbing mountains, so they've got energy I can only envy. :) Hopefully will bump into them during succeeding Wednesdays in the neighborhood.

Woke up around 1030am. Ignored Salcedo market. Upset that Persia Grill's landline number for delivery wasn't working. The silver lining was that I cooked myself lunch. See my previous post for what I cooked and ate. Now I figure that I will try not to spend money and pay other people to give me food not cooked the way I WANT IT. Returning to the apartment tomorrow w/ 3 cookbooks including one on making sandwiches (paninis)....

Coron-Concepcion, Busuanga, Palawan

After a 4 year hiatus, back again to Concepcion, Busuanga. This part of Palawan is of the Calmianes group, further north than El Nido and the Cuyo Islands.

There are quite a lot of photos of Caniqui island, because Cousin Nonoy said my photos from last trip didn't do justice to the place. So here it is.

PAL Express now flies daily to Busuanga from Manila. You guys are free to join me anytime I return (I plan to fly back after the rainy season, maybe October). Next time I want to explore more islands and find some good trekking spots. Apparently, there's something to climb at Salvacion, the nearest town to Concepcion. :) :) Trip was just two days, but so worth

matters of consequence

Today was milder than yesterday, and I didn't mind my forty minute walk home. I had to ditch my running coach last minute because I had a late meeting. To make up, I decided to walk home the whole way (again). I'm glad there was no Pasong Tamo walking experience this time. The walk wasn't bad, but I kept switching my laptop bag from my right hand to my left and back.

I didn't have to buy or cook dinner tonight. My flat-mate said there was meatloaf in the fridge. Oh boy. I zapped it for a good two minutes in the microwave and it was ready to eat. I paired it with a 3 week old sky-flake and a few dashes of Knorr Liquid Seasoning. Ah.

* * *

The last thing life has been is mundane; rather, it has been regular. There is a routine and a certain reliability about things. I think that this definitely has benefits. Enough people have been flying in and out of the country though to keep things interesting. Bob is in town, so I'll be seeing you in the clubs more often. . .for

I had a long walk home tonight.

I figured I'd grab a cab at Pasong Tamo cor EDSA and skip the hell that would be Magallanes MRT at 730 pm. What I did not count on were the many dodgy jeeps and scarcity of cabs. What started as a little walk further down Pasong Tamo, became a long walk to Pasay Road. And since Greenbelt was now a stone's throw away, I decided to make it an all-walk to Salcedo village. I bought some bread at the neighborhood grocery so I could make pesto ham and cheese sandwiches that would be my dinner tonight. Then I had an orange. Now, I've drunk some tea and I can read a book before going to bed.

What a night.

Hopefully things will be less stressful

80th Academy Awards

Thankfully the awarding ceremonies pushed through due to the strike issue being resolved -- for perhaps the next 2 years. I am thankful not due to any concern for the entertainment economy of Los Angeles, but because of my own selfish entertainment needs. I have my favorites, I have my opinions and I enjoy being aghast at terrible terrible Academy decisions as to who should have or should not have won. Aside: who is that brit dude on E-TV with his Simon Cowell-ish (minus the sense) comments about fashion on the red carpet? He sucks.

This year I think I am slightly less opinionated because I didn't see as many Oscar movies. A lot of the films have been late releases (as is usually the case), but the releases have also been limited, even in the US. So I have seen less, and I am less aghast and querying.

Politics is what entertains us more these days it seems. Friends of mine who previously didn't bother following political news (what, who's Bhutto?), find the Barack-Hillary coverage co...

Dates with Reality TV

Those who don't want to read about the Amazing Race Asia 2 Finale including spoilers, read no further.

As my apartment has no internet connection (and I've recently decided that I don't really need it here, gasp!), I'm here in the closest coffee shop that gives Wi-fi service. I felt compelled to write about this episode ASAP, while still fresh in my mind.

The finale result wasn't much of a surprise because, as fellow LJ-er reige mentioned, the Sony ads leading up to this finale, gave it away. Still, it was not too bad to watch the final episode because I did want Adrian & Colin to win, but only because Adrian has the nicest smile when he wins. Marc and Rovilson, no doubt, actually deserved to come ahead, what with their dominant performances week after week, and though I'm sure Rovilson may be permanently scarred with flag-phobia, he and Marc should be proud that they did that well. They even brought out our flag on the way to the mat.

It was that final tactical error which cost t...

feeling something

Here's another LJ entry. But it may come with a steep price. I had promised myself that my work laptop (Thinkpad) would ONLY be to visit work-related / news sites. The firm can (and probably does) remotely check our browser histories. Well here early morning in a Starbucks with about an hour to kill, what am I supposed to do, stick only to news.bbc.co.uk and gmail? So LJ is now a guilty pleasure. Speaking of Starbucks, last Sunday was the opening of the 3rd one in Katipunan, right at the Petron gas station. Another place to burn your coffee money.

A friend had a "little something" at Mag:net Bonifacio High Street last night. Well, that last night was kicking.
Makati

Past two weeks has been spent settling in the new job, and so far it's been pretty good. Biggest change that has come about is that I'm now sharing a flat in Salcedo with a friend from grad school. So I'm here Sunday night, and I head on home Thurs or Fri night. Living here has allowed me to escape the evil to and fro commute between QC and Makati, and the shopping places are near AND people don't mind bringing me home. That being said, there are some things about Makati that I am not liking, such as air pollution, noise pollution, and people pollution. No matter, I think I'll start appreciating this place even more once I fix up this place I'm living in and I start partying again.

First order of business, get a live internet connection (luckily I have a friend who lives nearby and I can use his net connection). I don't know how some people who can, don't bother getting internet at their homes.

Weekend Gratitude

It was another full weekend, and I'm glad for all the old office folk who passed by Sat night. God, you plan a despedida party for 6pm and people still insist on arriving at 8pm!!

And in true MMG fashion, party ended at 4 am. Thanks to the cast of characters who came over: Vincent, Nicole, JP, Eileen, Nic, Rezza, Pao, Rissa, Esel, Rainier, Aaron, John, Jacqui, Ian, Joey and Jess. Who would have guessed that zapping cheese in the microwave and scrounging around for surplus red wine bottles would lead to a "high society" gathering. I was really glad you all came over. A number of other people weren't able to come and you were missed! You know who you guys are. . .

My ear doctor has a giant flushing device, that pumps a load full of water in your ear to clean it out. Was slightly disappointed that it took all of 20+ seconds for me to regain better hearing out of my left ear. Glad for the hearing, but here I was all ready for a good purging. It seemed to be too easy. I didn't even get a right ear flush! Damn. ;)

Holiday season has been quite hectic for lots of people, and I've refused to get sucked in the business and stress of preparations. Mostly this involves being impervious to emotional blackmail of having to hang out with everybody. In more than a few cases, one really will not be missed.

I should be punished because I've been spending money on MYSELF. But there is good (if slightly twisted) logic of buying presents for one-self => money is better spent. This is because someone is most accurately getting what one wants. You can blow a bundle on a CD that you HOPE said gift recipient will appreciate. Spent the entire morning on a lake trying to figure out how to make a turn through buoys -- finally figured it out on the 4th attempt. Now I can only anticipate the kind of aches I'll be having the next morning. The following ache already; forearms, shoulders, pecs, thighs, triceps, and -- as JV warned -- batok.

Had invited a couple other friends, who for various reasons weren't able to come along. We missed you! Hope you guys can come along next time. Today won't be the last time because Elmer seems like he got addicted (a la windsurfing).

Biking through the Gardens of Siam

The title of the tour was "From the Heart of Chinatown to the Gardens of Siam". I think more appropriate would be "One hour of Divisoria followed by the footpaths along the Chao Phrya". Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the tour :) Though what may have been exotic to others was just a crowded market to me.

This tour is organized by Co Van Kessel (www.covankessel.com), a Dutch national. While not too surprising, I didn't expect that 90% of the people who take this tour are the bike-loving Dutch.

Everytime I go biking -- whether mountain-terrain, city biking, or in this case by the river -- I seem to get into an accident. This time around, I needed help getting my left leg out of super-sticky mud (no photographic evidence).

I'd recommend this tour to anyone who wants a different way to get to know Bangkok. Tolerance for heat and bike-handling skills will come in handy

Dansu, Dansu, Dansu

It's only after reading a book that I do a little internet research on the author, reviews and the circumstances of the book's publishing. Murakami isn't a stranger, but I didn't know he was massive in Japan, the way Stephen King is massive in the US. I also had the mistaken impression that this book had been first published in 2003 as opposed to 1988 -- 2003 referred to the Vintage edition, which are nice editions because of the white cover designs, but anyway. . .

Murakami knows how to evoke loneliness on the page, and it's my impression that Japanese authors, generally speaking, are good at this. Sometimes, this can weight quite heavily on you, such that in my case I was ready to junk the book by around page 99. Typically I give the book around 100 pages before I call it "not the right book for me at the moment." As circumstances were, the story picks up at page 101.

Few lines summary of content: Okay, so over-simplifying things, it's about a lonely man who is looking for a ...
